Books, or Categories of Divine Guidance?
Introduction
For centuries Muslims have generally understood Al-Taurat to be the Torah of the Jews and Al-Injeel to be the Gospel of the Christians. According to the traditional narrative, these were scriptures originally revealed by Allah but later altered or corrupted by their followers.
While this understanding is widespread, the Quran itself invites us to examine every matter carefully and to reflect upon its signs.
A fundamental question therefore arises:
Does the Quran itself define Al-Taurat and Al-Injeel as historical books, or does it describe them in another way?
To answer this question, we must set aside inherited assumptions and allow the Quran to explain its own terminology.
The Torah according to traditional understanding :
The Gospel according to traditional understanding :

1. The Problem Presented by Surah Ali-Imran
The starting point is Surah Ali-Imran:
3:3 He revealed to YOU the Scripture [Al-Kitāb],
with the truth [bil-Haqi],
verifying [musaddiqan] to what was between his hands [yadayhi],
and He revealed the Taurat [Al-Tawrāt]
and the Injeel [Al-Injeel]
3:4 From acceptance,
guidance for the human race,
And is revealed the Criterion [Al-Furqan],
Indeed, those who are covered [kafarū],
with signs [bi-āyāti] of Allah,
for them, a great torment [‘adhabun ‘azimun].
And Allah is All-Mighty, All-Able of infliction
Notice that four entities are mentioned together:
- Al-Kitab
- Al-Taurat
- Al-Injeel
- Al-Furqan
Traditional interpretation assumes that three are books while one is not.
However, the verse itself does not explicitly state that all four are books.
This raises an important question:
If Al-Furqan is not necessarily a physical scripture,
should we automatically assume that Al-Taurat and Al-Injeel must be physical scriptures?
The answer must come from the Quran itself.
Our post on Al-Kitab here.

2. Understanding Al-Furqan
The triliteral root F-R-Q carries the meaning of separation, distinction and differentiation.
Throughout the Quran, Furqan is associated with the ability to distinguish truth from falsehood, guidance from error, and right from wrong.
The Quran therefore presents Furqan not merely as an object but as a function.
It is a means of discernment.
This observation is significant because Al-Furqan appears in the same sequence as Al-Kitab, Al-Taurat and Al-Injeel.
The verse may therefore be describing categories of divine guidance rather than simply listing books.

3. Letting the Quran Define Al-Taurat and Al-Injeel
Instead of beginning with later religious history, we should ask:
How does the Quran itself describe Taurat and Injeel?
Taurat and Injeel were mentioned repeatedly in pair in many occasions:
One of the clearest passages appears in 7:157.
The Messenger is described as one who:
- enjoins what is right
- forbids what is wrong
- makes lawful good things
- prohibits harmful things
- relieves burdens
- removes shackles
The Quran then states that these characteristics are found written in the Taurat and the Injeel.
This passage is important because the Quran explains the content of Taurat and Injeel in terms of functions and outcomes rather than titles of books.
Two complementary themes emerge:
The Taurat
- distinguishing right from wrong
- lawful and unlawful
- justice and accountability
The Injeel
- removal of burdens
- liberation from restrictions
- movement towards light
Already we begin to see two distinct but related modes of guidance.

4. The Pattern Continues
The same relationship appears elsewhere in 5:44
In 5:44 - 46, the Taurat is associated with:
- Guidance and Light
- Command of Allah
- Justice - to judge by it
- Accountability and fairness (5:45)
In 5:46 the Injeel is associated with:
- Guidance and Light
- Admonition for the Mindful
The distinction is subtle but consistent.
The Taurat appears connected with moral order, judgment and limits.
The Injeel appears connected with illumination, transformation and release.
Together they form a complete framework of guidance.
One establishes boundaries.
The other enables growth.

5. Similitudes
The Quran also expressed the Taurat and Injeel in similitudes.
The Taurat describes the believers' moral character and steadfast compliance with truth,
while the Injeel describes their organic growth and maturation into their full God-given potential, like a seed becoming a strong and fruitful plant.
This portrays Taurat as :
- steadfastness in principle,
- moral discipline,
- commitment to truth,
- obedience and compliance,
- loyalty to justice,
- communal compassion.
In short, the establishment of moral order, accountability, right and wrong, and faithful compliance with what is recognized as true.
The believer here is characterized by uprightness and commitment.
While for the Injeel, the imagery is:
- growth,
- development,
- maturation,
- unfolding potential,
- life and vitality.
The seed does not become something different from itself. Rather, it becomes what it was created to become.
Accordingly, The Injeel represent the liberation and realization of human potential through divine guidance.
The believer here is characterized by transformation and flourishing.
The combined message
The verse appears to present a complete picture:
Taurat
- Gives structure.
- Gives discipline.
- Gives moral direction.
- Teaches what must be upheld.
Injeel
- Gives growth.
- Gives vitality.
- Gives realization.
- Allows the believer to flourish.
Without Taurat, the seed grows wild.
Without Injeel, the seed never grows.
The mature believer therefore embodies both:
- the firmness and discipline of Taurat,
- and the living growth and flourishing of Injeel.

6. The Example of Isa
The Quran repeatedly associates Isa with:
- Al-Kitab
- Al-Hikmah
- Al-Taurat
- Al-Injeel
The interesting question is why these four are mentioned separately.
If Taurat and Injeel were merely the names of books, why distinguish them from Al-Kitab and Al-Hikmah?
The Quran appears to treat them as distinct dimensions of revelation.
This suggests that Taurat and Injeel may represent particular manifestations of divine guidance rather than simply physical texts.
We know from these verses the Taurat deals with what is lawful and forbidden, a guidance for Laws. (3:50)
While the Injil in 3:49 and 5:110 is described as the divine guidance to be illuminated and liberated.
Verse 3:49 & 5:110 had been commonly understood as a miracle performed by Isa. But we know it was not the task of messengers to perform miracles to convince those who do not believe.
Miracles are not Guidance. It will be a pointless exercise to convince the disbelievers and the Quran already reiterates that the messengers were just human after all. Please read Surah Al-Isra verse 17:90-93.
It is not the task of Isa to walk around to find clay and turn it into birds to impress the people, or to find dead bodies from the graves to make them walk again. People may not be impressed by dead people raised alive. They will be running for their lives.
This allegorical of clay symbolize human malleability, and the transformation to a bird as potential, freedom and liberty.
The Arabic expression “fa-anfukhu fi-hi : then I breath into it” often used to mean to educate, or to give knowledge – Like the arabic proverbs :” you have breathe something to his ears and now he is clever”.

7. Ibrahim and the Question of Timing
The Quran states:
Why do you argue concerning Ibrahim when the Taurat and the Injeel were not revealed until after him?
Traditionally this verse is understood chronologically.
And we know Ibrahim had gone through the process of seeking guidance and eventually submit to Allah.
So the prerequisite of receiving guidance is to be submissive to Allah (2:128) before being revealed to the Scripture.
Ibrahim represent the awakened mind that dismantled all inherited falsehood and rejecting Shirk.
This is the path of a Hanif - an inclination from falsehood, and thus, he became a submitter (mus'liman).

8. A Proposed Understanding
Based on the Quranic descriptions, a broader interpretation becomes possible.
Taurat
The Taurat appears to represent the dimension of guidance concerned with:
- moral judgment
- justice
- limits
- lawful and unlawful
- accountability
It functions as a divinely given moral compass.
Injeel
The Injeel appears to represent the dimension of guidance concerned with:
- illumination
- liberation
- removal of burdens
- growth
- transformation
It functions as a divinely given path towards higher realization.
These two dimensions are complementary rather than contradictory.
One establishes order.
The other enables flourishing.

Conclusion
The Taurat and the Injeel are not merely revelations that came to particular communities in history.
They represent two perpetual dimensions of divine guidance available to every human being.
The Taurat calls us toward justice, responsibility and moral discernment.
The Injeel calls us toward liberation, illumination and realization of our God-given potential.
Revelation does not create these realities; rather, revelation awakens them.
The purpose of this study is not to deny the historical existence of scriptures known as the Torah and the Gospel.
Rather, it is to ask whether the Quran uses the terms Al-Taurat and Al-Injeel in a deeper and more functional sense.
When all relevant verses are examined together, a consistent pattern emerges.
The Quran repeatedly describes Taurat and Injeel through their functions rather than through their physical form.
The Taurat appears as guidance that establishes justice, moral distinction and accountability.
The Injeel appears as guidance that brings light, removes burdens and enables human transformation.
Thus, the Quran may be inviting us to understand Al-Taurat and Al-Injeel not merely as historical books, but as enduring categories of divine guidance through which human beings are directed towards truth.
